Shortly after 1824\u00a0Syros\u00a0acquires\u00a0its first\u00a0organized\u00a0cemetery,\u00a0also known as the\u00a0Mausoleum\u00a0of\u00a0Agios Georgios.\u00a0With\u00a0the expansion\u00a0of\u00a0Ermoupolis the\u00a0cemetery\u00a0is\u00a0suddenly\u00a0found at the center of\u00a0the\u00a0district\u00a0of\u00a0the refugees from Psara\u00a0and\u00a0is forcefully\u00a0moved\u00a0to its current location.\u00a0The constructions\u00a0and\u00a0additions\u00a0followed\u00a0one another\u00a0with\u00a0the room for the dead before burrial\u00a0that\u00a0was built\u00a0in 1837,\u00a0the\u00a0Church of St. George\u00a0in 1839 and\u00a0the\u00a0Hieratic School\u00a0in 1858\u00a0which was later\u00a0converted\u00a0into a\u00a0charnel house.\u00a0The\u00a0old\u00a0mausoleum\u00a0suffered\u00a0great damage\u00a0and in its place\u00a0the new\u00a0cemetery\u00a0was built, surviving\u00a0to this day\u00a0in the heart\u00a0of Neapoli in Syros.<\/p>\n
This\u00a0is\u00a0a\u00a0cemetery\u00a0reflecting\u00a0the\u00a0history\u00a0and\u00a0culture\u00a0of the\u00a0magnificent\u00a0island of Syros in its exquisite mausoleums and\u00a0beautifully\u00a0decorated\u00a0tombstones.\u00a0The most imposing\u00a0tombs belong to\u00a0important\u00a0personalities of the\u00a0island\u00a0like Mavrokordatos, Benakis,\u00a0Antoniadis\u00a0and\u00a0Rodokanakis.<\/p>\n
The inscriptions\u00a0on the monuments\u00a0unveil characteristics\u00a0from the lives\u00a0and homeland\u00a0of the desists\u00a0while\u00a0the decoration\u00a0details indicates\u00a0the power, prestige\u00a0and origin.The\u00a0cemetery\u00a0of St George\u00a0is\u00a0divided into\u00a07 sections\u00a0while\u00a0the\u00a056\u00a0mausoleums congregate in\u00a0a\u00a0separate area\u00a0on the northeast side.<\/p>\n
